Light the desk, not the screen
OSHA's workstation guide asks for task lighting placed so it does not reflect on the screen, lamps with shields or shades that direct light away from your line of sight, and indirect or shielded lighting where you can.
Windows
Turn the screen so its face is at right angles to windows and bright lights, and use blinds or drapes to control direct sun. OSHA notes that vertical blinds work best for east and west facing windows and horizontal blinds for north and south.
Many small lights beat one big one
OSHA says many low-powered lamps generally give less glare than a few high-powered ones. It also suggests non-reflective, medium-coloured surfaces around the screen, and cleaning the screen often, since dust adds to glare.
Warm or cool
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin. The US Department of Energy's lamp buying guide lists warm white at 2,700K for homes, soft white at 3,000K, neutral at 3,500K and cool white at 4,100K for offices and classrooms. It also warns that a big jump, such as 2,700K to 4,100K, is noticeable.
Some tunable LED lights mix a warm white, usually around 2700K, with a cool white, usually 5000K to 6500K. DOE gives the example of tuning warmer in the early morning and late afternoon and cooler at midday.
Where a monitor light bar fits
A monitor light bar is a shielded task light that sits on the screen and aims down at the desk. The Yeelight Screen Light Bar Pro in our Showcase uses asymmetric front lighting for this.
